Magical McGrew Studios

After talking with some lovely new friends about downtown SLC, I realized that I had neglected to post about my friend's lah-de-dah shop McGrew Studios.  Jennifer is a professional seamstress, costume designer, creator of all things fantastic and imaginative.  With the success of the Comic Cons and Fantasy Cons in the city, she is the go-to place for the perfect thing to wear, whether a steampunk chick or a Christmas elf.

Elizabeth's Bakery

I LOVE English tea shops and how fabulous to have such a sweet one here in SLC.  There are scones (the cheese scones are my absolute favorite), pies (chicken and mushroom - yum), fairy cakes, quiche, a variety of teas, and much more.  The atmosphere is quaint and cute.  It's enjoyed best with a friend. The location is now at 439 E. 900 S.

Tabula Rasa

My all time favorite store downtown is Tabula Rasa, which is latin for "blank slate".  It is every paper lover's, writer's, and lover of exquisite things, dream store!  The manager has an eye for the refined and is so kind and approachable; in fact all who work here are so helpful.  I cannot get enough of their wax and seals, inks and pens, papers and cards.  The store also has jewelry, books, glassware, figurines, and on and on.  Even if you never buy anything from this wonderland, you should stop by this Trolley Square shop to have a peek at beauty.

Toaster's Deli

One day Matthew and I were taking a ramble downtown together.  We were hungry and came across Toaster's on 300 South.  It was the perfect choice.  The sandwiches are large enough to share and come with tasty chips or other sides.  It has won awards and has a nice atmosphere.  So go and get something tasty from Toaster's.

Ward and Child

I found this garden store years ago when I was in the Rose Society.  The best word to describe what they carry is: Gorgeous!  Yes, things are a bit pricey, but there are always little treasures for under $10 worth taking home.  And as for the rest, you can get ideas to make your garden fabulous.
If you aren't one to fuss over a garden, this is still the place for you because of what is behind the store.  A private garden!  I love going there.  Just go to the door in the back corner of the store.  It leads to their selection of plant containers.  Just beyond that is the garden.  It is perfectly okay to be there; they even rent it out for wedding photos
and some receptions.
The garden has beautiful plants, little pathways, a fish pond, and fruit trees arching over metal archways.  It is pure loveliness.  I recommend it when you need to refresh yourself and restore some inner peace.
I can't find a website but their contact info is:
678 South 700 East
801.595.6622
It is just south of the east side of Trolley Square.

Downtown Library

It boggles my mind how many people in the valley have never been to the downtown library!!!  It is a beautiful building and even if you will never pick up a book in your life, it is worth a visit.  (I, of course, recommend checking out a book because it will guarantee a return trip.)  There are a few little shops to browse and then explore the building.  My children love the glass elevators, even if little Jensen has to hold my hand and grasp the rail with all his might.  When you are done inside, ride to the top and go outside.  The view is spectacular!  There are areas to eat lunch or dinner, so bring a snack and look around at the city.  When you are ready to go, don't go back inside, but go through the gate and take the stairs that curve back down to the courtyard.

The courtyard is refreshing as well, with water features, statues, and lovely plants.
Twice a year, in April and October, the library has a huge book sale on the bottom level.  You can get all kinds of great finds for bargain prices and you will be supporting the library at the same time.  So go and be dazzled!

Tony Caputos

After you stop at Carlucci's Bakery for the baguettes, you need to go to Tony's next door.  He has an expansive list of cheeses to choose from.  Paul and I usually get Prima Donna, but there are many favorites.
Tony's also has a Fish Monger, the only one in SLC I believe, where you can get the freshest fish available.  I've been there several times and the workers are always willing to help in any way.
You can buy sandwiches at lunch and it is a restaurant in the evening.  Paul and I usually just go there for yummy cheese to eat with our bread, but this is where I buy my olive oil and balsamic vinegar.  Occassionally we will sample the chocolate from their wide selection.  Tony's is a must for any downtown visit.  At 3rd and 3rd.
